How to make a splash in social media

Video Information

Speaker: Alexis Ohanian
Talk: How to make a splash in social media

Description
This video talks about a website poll created by Greenpeace to name a humpback whale. Greenpeace came up with several names, among them were Anahi, Kaimana and Mr. Splashy Pants, also known as Splashy. One of Reddit's (a social news site) users thought the name Mr. Splashy Pants was great. He posted it on Reddit and asked people to vote for Splashy. The name became very popular and won. Greenpeace wasn't happy with the name however, so they left the poll open for another week hoping that the results would change. People weren't happy with Greenpeace after that. Splashy gained another 8% of the votes, bringing it to 78% at the end of the poll. The next most popular name had 3% of the votes.

After the poll was over and Splashy had won, Greenpeace started creating merchandise with the Mr. Splashy Pants logo on it. They even went so far as to create an e-card with a dancing Splashy. In the end it all worked out for Greenpeace, it just didn't go the way they wanted it to.

My Impressions
I think the most important thing to learn from this is that it is OK to lose control. You can't fight the masses on the internet. If something catches on and it works for you, just go along with it.
